SEO rules do affect blogs – SEO Essex included!
One thing to remember when using Wordpress blogs is to get a good SEO plugin installed, this is especially important if you are using the Wordpress platform as an actual website (such as this one). I have the latest SEO plugins installed and they assist with everything from unique deployment of meta information to the compliant structuring of URLs.
The problem is that when the SEO plugin is installed webmasters and bloggers think the job is done and they do not need to be vigilant, the truth is that mistakes can be made that undermine your profile where Google is concerned.
This was brought home even to me when I noticed a drop of almost 10 positions this week even after some careful link work, this was down to me hitting a duplication filter after my blog inadvertantly cloned my homepage content on two other pages.
As soon as I noticed the slippage I felt something was up, SEO positions that are stable for a period (this site stabilised in position 16) that then fall significantly usually do so due to some issue with Googlebot (so long as they are not spamming). With SEO Essex the fall made me start investigating, this is where an SEO consultant earns his corn. I found indexed, three pages that had duplicate title tags and that meant two clones.
The problem was compounded when I looked at those pages and found that the sticky post I used for the homepage was indeed resident elsewhere, this was a large post stating out the mission statement for SEO Essex and so I had to let the sticky post go and ‘unsticky’ it.
Immediately I have regained 5 positions and I am hoping that writing some new material will help the recovery further. In addition I now have the issue that using a logo has deprived me of a heading 1 tag for the homepage, this is an important SEO requirement so I am looking into that. I also still have the problem of duplicate meta on page two and page three and so I am also looking for a solution here, this must be a common place issue for blogs and so I will post here what I try out and any success.
Remember even with the SEO plugin you must be vigilant with Wordpress architecture.
